CNR/ISTThe National Research Council (CNR) is a public organization; its duty is to carry out, promote, spread, transfer and improve research activities in the main sectors of knowledge growth and of its applications for the scientific, technological, economic and social development of the Country.
The National Research Council performs and promotes research activities in pursuit of excellence and strategic relevance within the national and international ambit, within the framework of the European cooperation and integration as well as of the cooperation with university research and with other public and private bodies. For the carrying out of its activities and of any other related activity, including the economic utilization of its own research results, CNR may draw up agreements and conventions, take part or constitute associations, foundations or companies with public and private, Italian and foreign bodies, in accordance with its set of rules. CNR may also take part in international research centres in cooperation with similar scientific institutions of other countries. CNR is constituted by 108 Institutes; ISTI is one of those 108 Institutes.

The Institute of Information Science and Technologies (ISTI), located in the CNR Research Area of Pisa (Italy), is an institute of the Italian National Research Council (CNR). About 180 researchers are employed at ISTI, plus a great number of PhD students. The Institute is committed to producing scientific excellence and to playing an active role in technology transfer. The domain of competence covers the Information Science, related technologies, and a wide range of applications. The research fields of ISTI are: Formal Methods and Tools, Software Engineering, System and Software Evaluation, High Performance Computing, Dependable Computing, Wireless and Satellite Networks, Networked Multimedia Information Systems, Information Systems, Knowledge Discovery and Delivery, Human Interfaces in Information Systems, Creative Virtual System, Home Automation and Computer Aids for Disabled and Elderly Persons, Visual Computing, Signals and Images, Mechanics of Materials and Structures, Space Flight Dynamics. The activities of the Institute aim at increasing knowledge, developing and testing new ideas and widening the application areas. ISTI is actively involved in collaborations with the Academic world and in cooperative research and development programmes, both national and international ones. In recognition of the importance of training in today’s Information Society, ISTI pays great attention to involving doctoral students and post-doctoral fellows in research activities and actively participates in the doctoral programmes of the University of Pisa and other partner universities.
